Sergio Agudelo believes he can play again for Atletico Madrid and is willing to return to Spain for a chance at international recognition.
The 26-year-old midfielder, who has been linked with a return to La Liga with the likes of Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona, was speaking to the Spanish daily AS on Wednesday, after playing a starring role in Atletico’s 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbrons first league defeat of the season.
I’m happy to play in a big league again.”
I played in Spain but I was only here for a couple of years.
I’m happy to play in a big league again.
It would be a dream come true to play here again.”
In 2014, Agudalo was called up to the Spain squad by coach Vicente Del Bosque, who said the striker was one of the best players in the world and was a player who had the ability to be a great player in the future.
After his debut season at Atletico, Agüeros first goals came in the second half of the 2015/16 season, when he scored four times in the Liga as Atletico won La Liga, Copa del Rey and Copa Libertadores.
But his performances declined in the following season, and it was in the first half of last season that he started to suffer a slump, scoring just once in the league and missing out on a Champions League place.
Last season Agudela struggled with the injuries that he has suffered since his arrival at Atleti and, as a result, struggled to make the team that started the season in first place, finishing eighth in La Liga.
He missed a few games to injury in the final months of the campaign, and ended up making just one appearance for the first team in the Copa Del Rey, which ended in a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbia.
But the striker has recovered well and has been back in action since January.
In fact, Aguedelo, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, has been one of Atletico ‘s main players in recent weeks, having started the team’s last four games.
“It’s not an easy situation,” Agudelos coach Diego Simeone told reporters after the 2-1 win over Bilbains.
“He’s still recovering, but he’s ready.
He has played so well for us.
He’s one of our main players and he’s playing every game, even in the worst of times.”
